App vs. Mobile Website — one of the most frequently asked questions we receive from clients.  More than a few have asked us whether or not they should invest in building an app for their business. More often than not a mobile website is sufficient to fulfill a client’s needs, but that doesn’t mean that an app should never be considered, or can’t be useful. The inevitable has finally happened.

As was expected, people are now using their mobile devices to access the internet more than they use their desktops. Predictions state that by 2017, 85% of the global population will have 3G coverage.  If you’re a business owner this only reinforces the fact that you must have a mobile presence. It’s no longer a question of whether or not you should have a responsive site: responsiveness is now the minimum requirements — you absolutely should have one.  A dedicated mobile site is even better.

According to Google research, “By 2013, more people will use their mobile phones than PCs to get online.”  Furthermore, if you haven’t been paying attention to what your site looks like on a mobile device, chances are you are sending your potential clients elsewhere.

What does a bad mobile experience can do to your business?  Here are some numbers from a recent survey:

  • 61% of users said that they’d quickly moved to another site if they didn’t find what they were looking for right away.
  • 79% of users will search for another site if they don’t like what they find on one site.
  • Even if they like a business, 50% of users said they will use them less often if the website isn’t mobile-friendly
  • 52% of users said that a bad mobile experience made them less likely to engage with a company

The number of people who use their mobile phone to access the internet is growing rapidly   According to one study, there was a 102% growth in website traffic via mobile devices from Q4 2010 to Q4 2011.  In the US, Comscore reported that the number of smartphone users are now close to 97.9 million and almost half of the respondents to their survey use their phone to browse the internet.

The numbers are undeniable, and if your website isn’t easily browsed on mobile devices, then you are definitely losing potential customers.
