Take Advantage of Free Google Tools to Improve your Website

Mar 26, 2012 By Melissa Cahill

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Most of the small business owners I meet with are aware of the importance of showing up in Google search results, and many use popular Google products like Gmail and Docs.  Some of them have even been venturing into the world of Google Plus, creating business pages on the new social platform to promote their products and services.  But even my savviest clients often overlook the free tools that Google provides that can help them improve their websites to better promote their companies: Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools.

The set-up and configuration of these tools may be a bit more than the typical business owner can deal with themselves, but it’s very easy and your webmaster (or whoever designed your website) should be able to help.  Once installed, they can both provide a wealth of information about activity on your site.

Is Your Site Mobile-Friendly?

Feb 28, 2012 By Melissa Cahill

The number of people who use their mobile phone to access the internet is growing rapidly   According to one study, there was a 102% growth in website traffic via mobile devices from Q4 2010 to Q4 2011.  In the US, Comscore reported that the number of smartphone users are now close to 97.9 million and almost half of the respondents to their survey use their phone to browse the internet.

The numbers are undeniable, and if your website isn’t easily browsed on mobile devices, then you are definitely losing potential customers.

To see what your website looks like on a mobile device, visit  MobileTest.me.  The site lets you enter your website URL and displays what it looks like on a mobile device.  You can choose different type of devices and test how your website looks like on each.

Give Potential Customers a Reason to Call

Feb 21, 2012 By Melissa Cahill

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

So, you have a well-optimized website and the requisite company profile on all the social media networks – now what?

B2B businesses, especially professional services firms, have to find a way to stand out among the competition. The best way to do that is to share your knowledge with your  potential clients.

Think about what your previous or current customers needed to know before they hired you. What concerns did they have when they initially reached out?  What problems were they hoping to solve by talking to you? Try to develop a few “client personas” so you can answer those questions and create content that speaks to them. Maybe you produce a case study or whitepaper that can be shared on your blog or social networks; maybe you host a webinar to explore a particular situation — a regulatory or technological change, perhaps, or anything else that may impact their businesses, for better or worse.

linkedin_logoThe Content Marketing Institute explores different approaches to take when developing content in this terrific post, and offers good, practical advice for how to go about preparing a content marketing strategy.

And don’t forget to take a look at what your peers and potential customers are talking and asking about on industry specific forums and LinkedIn Answers. Answering business-related questions in your niche not only helps you showcase your expertise, it also helps drive traffic back to your website.
